Interview with Fumi Hancock, author of ‘The Adventures of Jewel Cardwell: Hydra’s Nest’

Welcome to Beyond the Books Fumi Hancock! Can you start out by telling us whether you are published for the first time or are you multi-published?

Thank you for having me. Well, I have written several inspirational non-fiction books for women long time ago. However, the Adventures of jewel Cardwell: Hydra’s Nest is my very first Young Adult Fantasy & Romance Novel. I am very excited and proud of it.

When you were published for the first time, which route did you go – mainstream, small press, vanity published, or self-published and why or how did you choose this route?

I went the route of Publish on Demand. The company I used has been good to me. While it is publish on Demand, their process is pretty much like a traditional publisher. They have editors who are on your backs to make sure you present your work in a professional way. You also have a consultant who is kind of like an accountability person who ensures that you are on target.

How long did it take you to get published once you signed the contract?

It took me 6 months… We had to take our time with each step. The most time was spent at the editing phase. Whew! It was tough but all worth it.

How did it make you feel to become published for the first time and how did you celebrate?

Wow! When I saw the first copy of my novel… my very first fiction work, I literally started crying. All the years of travelling back and forth Africa… going deep down into my memory reservoir to find stories comparable to that of my character… they all came rushing back. I am truly grateful for the experience.  My family took me to dinner in honor of the release.

What was the first thing you did as far as promotion when you were published for the first time?

I ensured that m y social media is up….facebook, twitter and goodreads. Then, I started reaching out to fellow authors like myself.

Since you’ve been published, how have you grown as a writer and now a published author?

Tremendously! I know the sequel to my book will be a lot better. The authors, bloggers, reviewers and readers I have met along the way have been very helpful where providing some direction with my next book.

What has surprised or amazed you about the publishing industry as a whole?

Nothing surprises me in life. However, with my book hitting Amazon’s Best seller list in the Teens-Horror category in Nov. 2012 and now currently remaining at 15 as the most tagged in the Teens-Fantasy on Amazon; I no longer feel the urge to seek out traditional publishers. That is not to say if they come knocking, I won’t consider… just that with the advent of ebook on Amazon, the sky is the limit. Why fix what’s not broken?

What is the most rewarding thing about being a published author?

Just knowing that you are entertaining someone with your words is just amazing. Majority of my reviewers have told me how vivid my description of my chosen location: South Africa. In fact, they added that they literally found themselves in the streets… My work is accomplished!

Any final words for writers who dream of being published one day?

First, love what you do.
Second, Write! Write! Write! And never stop writing.
Third, Be confident in your gift. If you are not confident that you are a great writer, others won’t buy into it.
Lastly, Network with authors, bloggers, reviewers ad ofcourse the readers. Marketing Plan must be a well laid out plan and must be included in your final plan(s) for your book.

About the Author:

Fumi Hancock is a walking example of how an ordinary person from a shackled life of broken promises and shattered dreams can live a fulfilled destiny. After twenty years of dropping her pen, she picks it right back up again by releasing the first in the Grimmlyn Series: The Adventures of Jewel Cardwell: Hydra’s Nest. Though graduated with a postgraduate degree in communication arts, and undergraduate degrees in English studies and nursing, she ascribes her writing to her life experiences, which were many times challenging. According to her, the protagonists and antagonists in her novels often come from the darkest moments of her life—a tribute to the fact that something good can come out of mysterious and difficult circumstances, if we choose to turn our challenges around. Age is merely a number where success is concerned. She also pulls some of her characters from her travels around the world—in particular, exotic Africa—uniquely weaving her tales.

Fumi loves to write for young adults, particularly urban fantasy, and paranormal fiction with a touch of romance. She aspires to one day write a mystery/detective novel for the adult audience. But for now, she is content with her young adult audience. With her background in nursing, she gently nurses her unusual characters to life for her readers to enjoy.

She lives in Tennessee with her husband, Dr. David Hancock, and her two grown sons, Bola and Demola Thompson. She cherishes her two stepdaughters, who reside in Michigan.
