Character Interview: Counselor Dynamite from Starr Burgess’ Children’s Book, Counselor Dynamite

character interviews logoWe’re thrilled to have here today, Counselor Dynamite from Starr Burgess’ Children’s Book, Counselor Dynamite. Counselor Dynamite is the latest hero to hit the scene!

It is a pleasure to have her with us today at Beyond the Books!

How did you end up in Starr Burgess’ Christmas book?

I was in search of an author who had experience in working with children and who could tell our story in a way that was engaging and purposeful.

What is your mission?

To serve and protect children and support staff members in schools everywhere.

How does it feel to be a superhero and what do you like most about it?

It’s a humbling experience. I have a great sense of purpose because so many children are depending on me and view me as a positive role model. What I like the most is seeing the positive change in the behavior of children…watching them honor one another and be mindful of their words and actions.

Why does everyone get so edgy before Christmas break and how do you handle it?

I think everyone gets so edgy because the teachers and students have worked so hard, are exhausted, and are ready for a break. I handle the chaos of school by being calm, cool, and collected and like so many superheroes I understand my purpose is to diffuse chaos and restore peace and balance.

What is it like working with your author, Starr Burgess? Does she listen to you?

Starr is a little headstrong, but she’s very focused on maintaining the integrity of the character and sharing the applicable life lesson of the story. Yes, Starr is a very good listener in fact I have found that we both live by the same motto: “No One Cares How Much You Know Unless They Know How Much You Care,” which is evident through the stories she writes.

What’s happening next? Do you have another adventure on the works?

We are gearing up for our counselling conventions and upcoming author readings and book signings. Also I believe there may be a book tour, a radio show focusing on issues prevalent among children, and hopefully one day turning the adventures of Counselor Dynamite into a cartoon for children. The next book, Counselor Dynamite Befuddles the Bullyville Crew, will be available in the fall of this year and will focus on empowering students through the use of coping tools to aid them in overcoming bullying behaviors.

It’s Christmas time and Counselor Dynamite is the newest superhero to hit the scene.

Counselor Dynamite’s mission: To serve and protect children and support staff members in schools everywhere.

It’s the day before Christmas break. Teachers and staff are either running low on patience or are just plain tired. The students as you might have guessed are full of unbridled energy, but one thing is for sure everyone is ready to start Christmas break. Counselor Dynamite notices that something is amiss and quickly jumps into action knowing that if something isn’t done soon, students, teachers and staff will never be the same once chaos is unleashed. Will her helpers and faith be enough? Starr Burgess’s endearing story is brought to life by Victor Guiza’s vivid, colorful, and crisp illustrations.

Counselor Dynamite will capture the laughter and spirit of the holiday season with mischievous behavior and humor so contagious you will want to read it again. Counselors everywhere will be inspired to reinvent their own special quick, happy dance marking the end of each adventurous day.
