Welcome to Beyond the Books Darlene! Can you start out by telling us whether you are published for the first time or are you multi-published?

I am multi-published.  I have 10 books published on Amazon in the self-help, stress management niche.

When you were published for the first time, which route did you go – mainstream, small press, vanity published, or self-published and why or how did you choose this route?

I am self-published.  I use the Amazon Kindle Publisher Program.  Here is why.

Women are online in LARGE numbers, and women shop on Amazon in droves.  So the kindle is a “natural fit” to reach women around the globe with my self-help books and stress management information. Kindle books are easily available online.  You don’t even need to own a kindle to be able to download and read books in kindle format. All you really need is an Amazon account and you can purchase, download, and read the self-help books in a matter of minutes. .You can even log-in to your Amazon account and purchase the books to give as gifts to someone who may need some stress relief.  All you need is the recipient’s email address and Amazon will do the rest!

Another reason the kindle format is an excellent fit for my self-help books for women is because you can immediately access the information.  Unlike traditional hardcopy books that have to get shipped, the Kindle format is digital and can be downloaded immediately, whether 9 AM in the morning or 11PM at night.  The sooner women can get their hands on the self-help stress solutions, the sooner they will be able to apply it and start living happier lives with less stress.

Finally, the kindle format allows me to offer my self-help books to women at really affordable prices. With this horrible economy, money is hard to find.  Self-publishing on kindle helps me to keep the costs of the books under $5.  And for members of my Stress Management Fan Club, I even FREE AMAZON promos where they can download one of the books for FREE during special give-aways.

So the kindle format is easily available online through the biggest online shopping resource in the world (Amazon), its available for immediate download, and it’s super affordable.  A winning proposition for women around the globe who are in need of natural stress relief solutions.

How long did it take you to get published once you signed the contract?

Once my book was finished, it took me about two days to get published using the Amazon Kindle Publisher Program.

How did it make you feel to become published for the first time and how did you celebrate?

Absolutely wonderful!  I did not celebrate when the first book was published, but I did celebrate when I got my first book review published on Amazon.  THAT was when I really I got excited.  Publishing  the book on Amazon was pretty easy once I followed the instructions ad tips from my mentor.  Getting the book promoted, read and reviewed was more challenging.  Having a reader share how the book helped her reduce stress and manage life’s challenges more effectively was simply priceless.

I went out to my favorite local pasta restaurant to celebrate my first book sales and review.

What was the first thing you did as far as promotion when you were published for the first time?

I did FREE book promotion days on Amazon, where the book can be offered FREE of charge via  I still do free book promotions days, and I announce the Free days to members of my stress management club ( ).  I also promote the books via social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, and have created book trailers for viewing on Youtube.

I also hired a social media manager who is in charge of managing my social medial promotions.  I feel that it is necessary to have a professional social media expert in charge of my social media promotions.

I also retained a virtual book tour manager, who is organizing virtual blog book tours for the books with a chance to win a FREE Kindle.  You can find the details of my virtual book tour here:

Since you’ve been published, how have you grown as a writer and now a published author?

My sense of responsibility to my readers and target audience has grown since publishing the first book, and subsequently nine (9) more to complete the 10-volume series: Self-Help Stress Solutions.

I offer one-on-one support via email. I always answer emails personally.

Most of the time when we are stressed, having someone to talk to goes a long way in helping to soothe frazzled nerves or just to help regain perspective and direction.  Some women, may not always feel comfortable opening up to family members, others may live far away and isolated from family and friends, like I was for many years.  Yet, via cyberspace, with the click of a button, you can connect with someone in a meaningful way that brings some perspective and peace to your life.

Developing a meaningful support network is by far the single most important natural stress management strategy for women. The support network does not have to be big and extensive.  It can be as strong as one person you can confide in, one pair of shoulders to cry on, and one pair of trustworthy listening ears.

What has surprised or amazed you about the publishing industry as a whole?

I was amazed to realize the bulk of the work is not in writing and publishing the book, but in promoting it. I had to learn a lot of new skills that can help me reach women online more effectively through facebook, twitter, youtube, my blog and my website.  Women are online in large numbers in search of information and solutions to problems they face every day.  That’s why I decided to take a course in publishing for Kindle this year, to publish and promote my Self-Help Stress Solution Book Series and market the books effectively using social media.  You can find me on the web and find out how to buy the books by visiting my Amazon Author page ( ) or my blog ( )

What is the most rewarding thing about being a published author?

Being able to reach a reader in a meaningful way with valuable truths, principles and pieces of wisdom that can change lives for the better.  Reading positive book reviews and customer feedback that express how the book has impacted someone positively and helped them to cope with or overcome the crippling burden of stress, regain balance, joy, and proper perspective.  Often times we get overwhelmed by life’s trials and challenges, and a few practical tips and pointers may be all that is needed to regain perspective.  Truth is, the BEST things in life are actually free!  They are all things that money cannot buy…such as good health, true friends, a loving family, a happy home, and a close relationship with God.  Focusing on those things is what brings true happiness, contentment and the ultimate in stress relief.

We can empower ourselves to conquer anything, including stress. That realization alone is supremely liberating.  We do not have to be enslaved to stress, anxiety, depression, and an unhappy life.  We can all take steps and measures to banish stress and live a life of peace, contentment, simplicity, inner joy and happiness.  And it’s easier than you may think.  The challenge comes in taking the decisions to change priorities in life, and put the REAL important things first.  So you may have to switch career, from a high-powered executive job, to a simpler one.  You would earn less money, but you would be rewarded with so much less stress.  You may have to remove toxic people from your life, and may end of with fewer “friends”, but you would then have genuine friends who help you move forward in life in positive ways.

Any final words for writers who dream of being published one day?

Life is busy and demanding, and we rush about from one obligation to the next.  Writing requires time and dedication, which are often in short supply and can be challenging, but not impossible.  Your passion and inspiration to reach out and help others with your message is a major driving force and motivation to stay focused, and helps you set priorities where necessary to get your writing done, from start to finish!  If the motivation is strong enough, you will find a way to overcome any challenge.
